Brownfields & Site Redevelopment
A Brownfield, as defined by the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act
(CERCLA), is a "real property - the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant." Cleaning up and reinvesting in these properties protects the environment by decreasing urban sprawl, reduces blighted areas, increases residential property value near the site, and takes development pressures off green spaces and working lands.
The EPA's Brownfields Program provides financial and technical assistance for Brownfield activities through an approach based on four main goals:
- Protecting the environment and addressing Brownfields to ensure the health and well-being of America's people and environment.
- Promoting partnerships by enhancing collaboration and communication essential to facilitate Brownfields cleanup and reuse.
- Strengthening the marketplace by providing financial and technical assistance to strengthen the private market.
- Sustaining reuse by redeveloping Brownfields to enhance a community's long-term quality of life.
